J. Edward Cochran & Co. is one of the oldest independent insurance agencies in the tri-state area. Our namesake opened the doors in 1918, ready to serve the needs of American service personnel, their families, and their businesses at the end of World War I.
Initially, the founder, J. Edward Cochran, offered fire and marine insurance, but his reputation for taking care of his customers grew, and with it grew his staff, insurance company affiliations and his product lines.
Starting in the 1940’s, Edward W. Cochran, Sr. followed in his father’s footsteps. He grew the company with forward thinking business practices but never lost sight of the traditions and relationships established by his father.
Throughout the second half of the 20th century, insurance companies emerged and dissolved. Insurance agencies opened and closed their doors. Through it all, J. Edward Cochran & Co. continued to grow; many clients staying with the agency for decades.
Today, the firm is still run by the Cochran family. Edward W. Cochran, Jr., the grandson of the original owner, has been with the agency for more than 30 years. The past 20 years has been a period of great technological change. Ed has been very careful to infuse the very latest web and information technologies as a complement to old fashioned customer service, not a replacement for it.
As a longtime member of the Hagerstown business community, J. Edward Cochran & Co. is also active in philanthropic efforts across the region. The company has shared its success with a variety of nonprofit organizations—from groups that provide services to children, the hungry, and the disabled to organizations that provide benefits to society at large, such as music, dance, and art. The company encourages employees to volunteer and many serve as officers and board members of various organizations. |
